The antral follicle count (AFC) scan is one of the main fertility tests we use to assess a female's reproductive health.

You need to have completed a fertility assessment, including the AFC scan, before you can start fertility treatment.

What is an AFC scan?
The antral follicle count scan is a trans-vaginal ultrasound scan used to count the number of antral follicles inside each of the ovaries, each of which contains an egg.
During the scan, we will also examine the uterus, checking for any abnormalities that may affect your fertility, as well as your ovaries and their volume.
The ovaries tend to decrease in size in the time before menopause. Smaller ovaries have also been linked to a poor response to the stimulating drugs in fertility treatment.
This, combined with the anti-Mullerian hormone (AMH) blood test, provides an accurate measure of your fertility health.

When should an AFC scan be carried out?
We recommended that the AFC scan is carried out at the beginning of your menstrual cycle, during the early follicular phase, which is typically between days two and four.
This is because the AFC scan is also used to assess your ovarian reserve (the number of eggs you have left) so this allows us to do so when the influence of hormonal variations is minimal.
However, if you have an irregular menstrual cycle or absent periods, this won't stop us from performing the AFC scan.

How much does an AFC scan cost?
