Fertility treatment and IVF treatment on the NHS

1. Go to your GP first

If you’ve been struggling to conceive naturally, make an appointment with your GP.

They’ll talk you through your concerns, run some tests to get a better idea of your fertility levels and may send you to an NHS fertility specialist at your local hospital if further support is needed.

2. Seeing an NHS fertility specialist

If you're referred to an NHS fertility specialist at your local hospital, they'll run further tests and ask about your medical history.

They’ll first support you in getting pregnant naturally.

If this doesn’t work, they’ll will refer you for fertility treatment.

3. Choosing a fertility clinic

Your consultant will provide you with a pack including a referral letter and funding form alongside a list of NHS-approved clinics in your area.

Once you have chosen your preferred clinic, a copy of the pack will be sent direct to the clinic.

We proud to work directly with the NHS to provide fertility services to patients across the UK.

Read our advice on choosing a fertility clinic to help you make the best choice for you from your options available.

It’s important to note that eligibility for treatment funding varies by area based on the criteria.

4. Your first appointment with us

Once we receive your referral from your hospital, we'll contact you to book your first appointment with one of our expert fertility consultants.

If your test results aren’t up-to-date (within the last 12 months), we’ll arrange for these to be updated, so we can understand your exact needs and plan the best treatment for you.

If you're not eligible for NHS funding, you can still contact us for alternative funding options.

What is the NHS fertility treatment eligibility criteria?

Fertility treatment is sometimes funded by the NHS. Eligibility is based on criteria set by your local authority called an NHS integrated care board (ICB), including being a healthy weight, not smoking or falling into a certain age range.

Same-sex couples can also access NHS funding for intrauterine insemination (IUI), IVF or both with similar eligibility criteria.

There are some differences in who’s eligible for NHS funding from one area of the UK to the next.

If you want to know more about eligibility criteria in your local area, our clinic patient support teams can help you find this information.

For military personnel

If one or more partners is employed by the Armed Forces, then you should see your military GP or local GP.

If you meet the criteria for funding, a funding request should be submitted to NHS England Armed Forces funding for approval, not the local ICB.

Your GP will be able to help you with this.
