How does IVF work as a single woman?

We offer IVF and IUI fertility treatment options for single women who want to start a family as a solo parent.

We've prepared step-by-step guides to walk you through the fertility options available as a single women. For all treatment, a fertility assessment is an important first step. It gives us a clear picture of your reproductive health and helps us tailor your treatment to your individual needs.

IVF with donor sperm

During IVF, the eggs are collected from the ovaries following a course of hormone medication, and fertilised with donor sperm in the lab. You can choose from our sperm bank or choose someone you know. The resulting embryo is then placed back inside your womb to develop.

Intrauterine insemination (IUI) with donor sperm

IUI is a less invasive procedure which involves injecting healthy donor sperm directly into the uterus when you're ovulating. IUI is popular as it’s cheaper and shorter than full IVF treatment. However, IUI has lower success rates than IVF.

Frozen egg IVF cycle

If you've previously gone through treatment to freeze your eggs, these will be thawed for the next phase of your fertility journey. Your eggs will be fertilised with donor sperm, and the highest-quality embryo will be transferred into the uterus for implantation.

Choosing your sperm donor

We have a TFP donor bank that you can use if you’re set to have IVF or IUI treatment. We will work closely with you to help you find a sperm donor either from the TFP Donor Bank or from other reputable sperm banks.

Can I use sperm from someone I know?

We’ve helped many single women have a child using sperm from a known donor, typically a trusted friend.

If you wish to have IUI or IVF using a known donor, they will need to visit one of our clinics to have their semen analysed.

If this analysis shows them to be a suitable donor, we will need to carry out several other screening blood tests before going ahead.

Your donor will also need to attend free counselling provided by TFP Fertility UK, and sign consent forms.

It’s also important to note that sperm needs to be quarantined for three months and post-donation screening carried out before it can be released for your fertility treatment.

Paying for IVF as a single woman

We understand that finances are often one of the main considerations when exploring fertility treatment. This is especially challenging for single women who cannot access the same NHS funding as heterosexual couples.

We're transparent with our pricing so that you can make informed decisions about your fertility journey. The cost of your personalised treatment will be outlined during your initial consultation.

Our partnerships with Access Fertility and Bupa can make treatment costs more manageable. They offer a variety of payment packages, discounts for multiple cycles, and a potential refund if your treatment is unsuccessful.
