Pre-implantation genetic testing (PGT)

Pre-implantation genetic testing (PGT) checks embryos for genetic or chromosomal abnormalities during IVF treatment. It aims to identify the best embryo to reduce the chances of miscarriage or having a child with an inherited genetic disease.

Genetic Testing

What is pre-implantation genetic testing?

Pre-implantation genetic testing (PGT) is used to test embryos for chromosomal abnormalities and genetic disorders.

Chromosomal abnormality is one of the most common causes of miscarriage or IVF failure.

PGT is an additional step during in vitro fertilisation (IVF) where a small sample of cells is taken from each embryo.

For those at risk of passing on a genetic disorder, PGT can help them make an informed choice about their future family.

Types of PGT

TFP-IMG-Medical-0002
PGT-A
PGT-A tests for abnormal numbers of chromosomes (known as aneuploidy) in the embryo. Embryos with aneuploidy are at a higher risk of miscarriage and other genetic conditions, such as Down's Syndrome.

PGT-M
PGT-M tests for specific genetic disorders caused by mutations in a single gene (monogenic disorders), such as cystic fibrosis or Huntington's disease. NHS funding for PGT-M is available at TFP Oxford Fertility.

PGT-SR
PGT-SR tests for structural rearrangements in the chromosomes that may cause developmental defects or recurrent miscarriage. These changes can be inherited or can happen spontaenously.

How does PGT work

If you require pre-implantation genetic testing during IVF, we'll carefully take a sample of cells from each of the embryos created which is then sent to the Cooper Genomics Laboratory in London to be tested by expert embryologists.

A needle is used to capture a small sample of cells from an embryo

Biospy

During IVF, we grow your embryos for 5-6 days until they develop into a blastocyst. An embryologist will remove a small sample of cells from the blastocyst using a thin needle.

Embryo freezing

Following the biopsy, your embryos are frozen and safely stored in a cryopreservation chamber whilst you await the results of the genetic testing.

DNA testing

The DNA from the collected cells is tested to assess the number of chromosomes they contain (PGT-A and PGT-SR) or if they carry a specific genetic condition (PGT-M).

This process takes around four weeks to complete.

Embryo transfer

After receiving the results of your pre-implantation genetic testing, any embryos that are not affected by genetic or chromosomal abnormalities are suitable for transfer. The highest quality embryo will be chosen so that you can continue your IVF cycle.

How much does PGT cost?

The cost of your pre-implantation genetic testing is dependent on the type of testing you need and the number of embryos being tested.

PGT is an additional cost to your IVF treatment. Please visit your chosen TFP Fertility clinic for a breakdown of our pricing.
