What is semen analysis?
The most common cause of infertility in males is due to abnormalities found in the sperm. By carrying out a semen analysis, we can check:
The likelihood of achieving a pregnancy with your partner
Which treatment is the most appropriate for you and your partner
If there are any problems with your sperm that may require medical help to achieve a pregnancy
All of our semen analyses are performed using World Health Organisation guidelines. During the semen analysis, we check the sample’s volume and pH as well as:
Sperm density
This is the number of sperm you have in your sample. A low sperm count is known as Oligozoospermia.
Sperm motility
This is the ability of your sperm to swim. If your sperm have poor motility (known as Asthenozoospermia), this means that your sperm do not swim well and will therefore struggle to reach the egg without medical intervention.
Sperm morphology
This refers to the size and shape of your sperm. Sperm that is abnormally shaped can be a factor in male infertility. Low numbers of normal morphology sperm is known as Teratozoospermia.
We usually only require a single sample; however, we ask for it to be repeated to double-check anything that looks abnormal.
What can I expect from the semen analysis process?
When you arrive at the clinic, a member of the laboratory team will collect you from reception and show you to one of our private production rooms. They will provide you with instructions for producing your sample.
Some patients suffer anxiety over producing a sample. This reaction is quite common. Therefore, do not be alarmed if you feel you can’t produce a sample on a particular day. You can always rebook your appointment (at no extra cost) or take the pot home for a less clinical environment. If you do decide to produce a sample at home, please ensure:
You use the pot provided by TFP
The sample is not exposed to hot or cold temperatures
Our laboratory receives it within one hour of it being produced
Once we’ve carried out the semen analysis, we’ll book you in for a consultation to talk you through the results. We’ll recommend and explain any treatment options that may benefit you.
Of course, there is no obligation to go ahead with treatment following your consultation.

Who needs semen analysis?

How can I ensure my semen sample is the best it can be?
Abstain from ejaculation for the correct number of days
Refrain from smoking
Avoid/lower your alcohol and drugs intake. Some prescription drugs can affect your sperm count. Please check with your doctor if you are currently taking any medication
Eat a healthy diet full of antioxidants
Exercise regularly
Ensure the whole sample (especially the first part) is in the pot
What causes male infertility?
There are a number of causes of either having a low sperm count, decreased motility or absent sperm in the ejaculate.
An abnormal sperm test may be due to medical conditions, different medications, and lifestyle factors, in some cases, there isn’t a clear answer.
If your semen analysis is abnormal, we’ll look at your medical history and recommend another test if it’s required.
