Ultrasound scans

IVF cycles require additional scans during treatment and, if you become pregnant, to ensure the pregnancy is developing correctly. At TFP Fertility, we carefully monitor your progress through these scans to provide you with the best possible outcome.

What are ultrasound scans?

Ultrasound scans play a crucial role in the IVF process by monitoring your fertility journey and maximising your chances of success.

These scans are typically conducted more frequently, starting with an early scan, which is essential to confirm successful implantation. This scan ensures that the pregnancy is progressing well and there are no complications early on. Frequent scans also provide reassurance to patients who have been struggling to conceive for some time, before being discharged to NHS care.

Scans

Types of ultrasound scans

Ultrasound scans will be performed throughout your treatment process to ensure proper monitoring during your fertility journey. These scans include:

Fertility scan before treatment

As part of your fertility assessment, an antral follicle count (AFC) scan is performed. This is a transvaginal ultrasound conducted during the first half of your menstrual cycle, though it can be performed at any point if needed. The scan can be done even if you have irregular cycles or absent periods. The scan, along with an AMH blood test, helps us estimate your ovarian reserve, guide your dose of medications and likely response to IVF treatment.

What is analysed?

During the scan, we assess your ovaries and count the number of antral follicles in each ovary, each of which may contain an egg. We will also examine the uterus for any abnormalities that might affect your fertility.

Feedback

Following the scan, you will receive feedback from the sonographer, and the doctor's feedback will provide further information about the next steps, including medication.

Fertility scans during treatment

During stimulated IVF, you will need regular scans to count and measure the follicles in your ovaries. This informs us when you are ready for egg collection. If you are undergoing a frozen embryo transfer cycle, we will assess the ovaries and check the thickness of the endometrium (the uterine lining) to ensure that it provides an optimal environment for embryo development and implantation.

Early viability scan

Once you receive a positive result, an early viability scan will be scheduled at your fertility clinic. This scan is typically conducted between six and eight weeks of pregnancy and is performed via transvaginal ultrasound. The main purpose of this scan is to confirm that a pregnancy is present, ensure the baby is correctly positioned within the uterus, and identify any essential markers expected at this stage.

What happens when I receive my results?

The sonographer will provide you with face-to-face feedback, and you will receive a report detailing your scan and the next steps. If there are any concerns, the sonographer may recommend additional scans to monitor the pregnancy or refer you to the NHS for an early pregnancy assessment. If everything appears normal in the early scan, we will discharge you into the NHS system.
